What is a Coating?
You will see a lot of talk about coatings on our website and there is a good reason for that. Coatings are truly an evolution in automotive surface protection. Over twenty years ago, there was nothing but waxes and cotton terry towels available to ‘shine up’ your ride. As technology advanced, so did auto-care products. The next big advancement was synthetic sealants. These sealants were primarily based on man-made chemicals. They produced a more wet-look, and provided greater durability measured in months.
One of the problems with waxes and sealants was that while they provided great shine and some protection, they provided no real chemical resistance from things like bird-droppings, or any swirl-resistance. Meaning you could spend hundreds of dollars having your car polished, only to have it all ruined in just one wash. Careful technique of washing and drying was (and still is) of paramount importance in maintaining your vehicle’s finish.
Fast forward to just a few short years ago, nano-technology has begun to take off and we are now seeing it in car-care products. The ability to utilize nano-technology for surface protection was a big deal because it would result in a much stronger bond, resulting in greater durability. From this, coatings were born. Instead of measuring durability in months, we now measure it in years.
As with most new products, there was skepticism, even from us at first. But the science behind coatings does not lie – it is the real deal.
A coating is just that – a physical hard-shell layer of protection over the surface it is applied to. This ‘shell’ is made up of tiny nano-particles that bond to the surface and itself to form a very strong and durable bond that is over 100x thicker than a coat of wax or sealant. Some coatings are made of a compound called SiO2 (Silica Dioxide), others are made up of Ceramic, and some are made of a mixture of the two and other proprietary compounds specific to each coating.
The protection is so strong that it will resist chemicals like brake fluid, bird droppings, and acid! Additionally, you are benefited with greater scratch and swirl resistance, since the coating itself is hard, and harder than your automotive paint. Since the coating is harder than paint, it also repels dirt better than any wax or sealant. This means less washing and more driving!
The gloss and clarity of a coated surface is breathtaking, since you are essentially putting a layer of something that is clearer and glossier than your paint. The photos you see in our Portfolio are a testament to that.
Moving forward, we have now started to see more coatings being developed for other surfaces such as wheels, windows, fabrics, leather, plastic, and trims.
Wheels: By applying a coating to wheels, brake dust gets repelled and makes for a much easier cleanup. This is especially useful on cars that yield high levels of brake dust.
Windows: Creates a super hydrophobic layer over the glass to make water, rain, and slush literally fly off the glass, even at low speeds. This equals safer driving in inclement weather, and less money spent on wipers since you will hardly use them.
Fabrics & Leather: Creates a hydrophobic layer on the fabric & leather to repel liquids, and even permanent marker, dye transfer from jeans, and dare we say superglue! If you have kids in your cars, this can be a lifesaver for you!
Plastic & Trims: Over time, plastics and trims tend to fade, turning an ugly grey with strange textures. Coatings contain UV-inhibiting qualities that not only restore the finish of your plastics and trims, but keep them protected from fading again.
